Garden-based Education Grants for Schools & Non-Profits

A garden provides a vibrant tool for hands-on, inquiry-based learning and deepening your core curriculum. Problem solving, team building, cooperation, nutrition, gardening, and critical thinking all come to life in the garden. But, how can you fuel your garden project? We’ve compiled some grants available to schools and community organizations across Canada below!

Gro for Good grants – valued at $2,500 (cash + in-kind product donation) Deadline February annually

Will be awarded to selected projects across Canada based on community impact, youth involvement and sustainability.  The applicants will need to demonstrate one or more of the following benefits to the community: addressing health and wellness needs, enhancing the environment and/or engaging with youth.

Greening Canada’s School Grounds Grant – up to $3500 Deadline March annually

Applicants must provide a full description of their tree planting project and its benefits to the school community. The proposed project should take place on a public site where trees will be able to grow in perpetuity, allowing for the longevity of the positive impacts to the community

Learning Garden Grants – Nutrients for Life –  up to $500 Deadline March annually

The NFL School Garden Grant will support schools with a one-time funding amount of $500 to establish or enhance school gardens at K-12 schools across Canada. Funds may be used to purchase construction materials, seeds, tools, and other supplies to establish or develop a school garden.

FCC Agri-Spirit Grants  –  Between $5000 to $25,000  Deadline March annually

If you live in a community under 150,000 people and need funding for a project that enhances lives or contributes to sustainability, you are invited to apply. Funds can be used towards the implementation of a community garden, or many other projects including upgrades to hospitals and medical centres, childcare facilities, playgrounds, food banks, libraries and recreation centre.

WholeKids Foundation Garden Grant – $2000  Deadline October annually

The WholeKids Garden Grant program, schools and non-profit organizations turn outdoor spaces into powerful hands-on learning gardens that connect kids with food, spark their curiosity and support classroom curriculum. 

Co-op Community Spaces Grant – (AB, MB, SK only) –  $25,000 – $100,00 Deadline March annually

Co-op awards $2 million to capital projects across Western Canada every year. The program helps build places for everyone to come together to meet, play, learn and share. Areas of funding are Recreation, urban Agriculture and Environmental Conservation.

TD Friends of the Environment –  Between $2000 – $8000 Deadlines July & January annually

The Foundation supports a wide range of environmental initiatives, with a primary focus on environmental education and green space programs. Eligible projects include schoolyard greening, park revitalization, community gardens, park programming and citizen science initiatives. 

Canada Post – Up to $250,000 Deadline April annually

Funding will be allocated to projects that will generate maximum impact, creating lasting change for children and youth (up to the age of 21), in the following areas: education programming to help children reach their full potential, programming supporting healthy children, building  kid-friendly communities, services for children and youth with special needs and their families, programs that promote the interest of children and mental health programs for children and youth

 

Go Wild School GrantsVariable Deadline Fall Annually

Schools are invited to share their project ideas to take hands-on action to protect nature. 

Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots GrantsVariable  Deadline Fall Annually

Use the funding to support a youth-led action project that makes the community better for animals, people and the environment. 

Action Project Funding – Learning for a Sustainable Future $400 Deadline November Annually

Learning for a Sustainable Future provides funding for students and teachers to engage their school and community in an action project. Funding is available for schools, individual classes, and school groups/clubs.
