Our Vision:
A Garden in Every School; A School in Every Garden.
Our Mission:
Plant It, Grow It, Eat It!
Little Green Thumbs is investing fully in the future by connecting
children to the miracle of growing plants from seed through to bearing
fruit. In our program, children are amazed and inspired. They begin
choosing to eat healthy food. They start their own
gardens, and learn to relate to their environment in a whole new
way, learning stewardship, responsibility and teamwork. In their
care, a plant lives or dies. In their hands, the planet thrives
or declines.
Little Green Thumbs is committed to the transformation of young
people’s relationship to food. Through a “seed to salad”
in-class program, children participate in the empowering and enriching
experience of sowing, growing, harvesting and eating their own vegetables.
In its pilot year, 2003-04, five schools participated in the Little
Green Thumbs program. Over the years participation has increased
to many schools planting, growing and eating across Alberta and
Saskatchewan! Little Green Thumbs is a grass roots community phenomenon.
By 2007, the combined media readership (newspapers and magazines)
and viewer audience
(television) was over 2.5 million people in Canada. In the first
year it was featured by A Channel, Shaw Cable, Global TV, The Calgary
Herald, Saturday Night Magazine and EnRoute Magazine.
The "garden" of the LGT Garden Kits is the Maxikap system:

includes, in one design - soil, container,
fertilizer and watering system. The "sun" of the LGT Garden
Kits is a 1000 watt full spectrum grow light system.
As the founder of Little Green Thumbs I am delighted to share that
the project has grown bigger than me and expanded across Western
Canada. Please contact the key stakeholders and organizations now
running with the program.
In looking to the future, I also acknowledge my dear friend, Tom
Duncan, as a co-founder, for his compassion, generosity and wisdom
in helping launch the early phases of the program many years ago.
